Bull Elk watches over his cow and announces his presence. Point Reyes National Seashore

Bull Elk rests on a hilltop, watching down the valley where other Bulls are protecting their cows. There were three Bulls like this, on the hillside, some distance apart, but all alone. They were bugling, but didn’t move.

As we started out on the trail to find elk we saw this bull resting and watching his cow close by. Several hours later on our way back to the car they were both there. Although I took photos of large herds of elk, it was the single elk or perhaps one or two that I found most interesting. We heard lots of bugling but we didn’t see any fighting. It seemed to be the bulls saying, “I’m here and this is my space.”
