Northern Pintail

Northern Pintail WILD

This is the time of year for bird photography in the Phoenix area. We have about 3 to 4 months for the migrating birds. To the surprise of many people, there are many good riparian areas and when I’m out in them, this time of year, I always see other photographers.

Lyman Lake, AZ

White Mountains Oct 2009-18 PCC

I changed this color photo to IR using a NIK filter and then worked with it. Lyman Lake is a beautiful area, off the beaten path for most people. Closed off and on due to state budget issues, it is closed now for the season at least. I have traveled the back roads in the area, with a 4×4 vehicle, and the views are worth it. But don’t go next spring without checking on the status. The facilities and cabins, etc., in the main area are new and very nice. Lyman Lake is part of the State Park system.

Female Canvasback

Female Canvasback BIRDS

We don’t often see this large duck in the Phoenix area. The male is stunning but I haven’t seen one this winter. Its sloping profile distinguishes it from other ducks.

Cormorant

Cormorant WILD

It’s always fun to watch and photo Cormorants. They are often so animated as they move around, and their eyes are so expressive, especially when the sun hits them.
